The Great Manx Challenge

37.5m Sponsored Pursuit Race
The Great Manx ChallengeThe question was innocuous enough – “would you like to join me on a bike ride?” So asked my old friend, and I thought it was a lovely idea to ride through the countryside with him one afternoon. And it was for charity! Only when I had committed myself to joining him was it revealed that the gentle pedal was in reality a pursuit race around the Isle of Man, on the TT Course, and we were racing Team Marine! So the training has begun.

The two teams in the race are Team Marine from RM Poole, and our totally amateur and under-exercised team from “Challenge4Ben” which was established in memory of Royal Marine Benjamin Poole who tragically died on 28 th July 2008. Team Challenge4Ben includes Ben's family, friends and supporters, whilst Team Marine is made up of both serving and retired personnel, together with servicemen wounded in action, some of whom are amputees.

Team Marine aims to lap Team Challenge4Ben and the distance Team Challenge4Ben has completed before being caught on the 37.75 mile course is the distance for which sponsorship is being sought.

The event will take place on Friday 30th September 2011 and if anyone would like to sponsor this aging Pongo, it will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made to us here with all proceeds going to the SBSA, supporting men and families from the Special Boat Service.

MORE FUNDING for WWII VETERANS with Heroes Return

The Big Lottery Fund is committing over £1 million in extra good cause funding in the year ahead for the country’s WWII veterans to make sure they can make their personal battlefront commemorative journeys to the places they saw action.

The additional funding for the scheme comes on the day the Fund is naming the 50,000th individual to benefit from the Heroes Return grant schemes.

The Big Lottery Fund’s UK Interim Chair, Anna Southall, is presenting the 50,000th award to a veteran at the Imperial War Museum in London. The recipient is an RAF Bomber Command veteran Gordon Mellor who escaped occupied France with the help of the Resistance via the Comet Line. To date 50,000 veterans, widows, spouse and carers have taken up the opportunity presented by the scheme to make their individual pilgrimages.

The current Heroes Return2 programme, was scheduled to close in January but now remains open until 31st January 2012.

Through the scheme, Second World War veterans from the UK, Channel Islands and Republic of Ireland can apply for travel and accommodation costs to visit the places across the world where they saw active service or to take part in an official commemoration in the UK. War widows and widowers of veterans are also eligible, and carers and spouses can also receive funding to travel with veterans.

Help for Heroes Charity DVD

Heroes - The Greatest Movies Ever!
Help for Heroes Charity DVDRetailing at £9.99, every penny of profit from each copy sold (an average of £7.50 per copy) will go to the Help For Heroes charity. The DVD features countless excerpts from such memorable movies as 'The Longest Day', '633 Squadron', 'The Great Escape', 'Bridge On The River Kwai', 'The Battle Of Britain' and many more movies that have honoured the courage and heroism of the men and women of the armed forces throughout the years.

Giants of the film industry and independents alike have all allowed clips from their respected movies to be included free of charge. In fact, everyone involved from start to finish has waived their fees and reduced costs so that as much money as possible from the DVD sales goes direct to the charity. Help For Heroes makes a real difference to the lives of our wounded war veterans, both mentally and physically. All the money raised from the DVD will go towards building new Army Recovery Centres (ARC). ARCs provide care for seriously wounded or long-term sick soldiers, once they have left hospital. ARCs offer both mental and physical support. Not all soldiers have families that can provide the level of supervision and care needed to help someone who has a long term, serious injury. In addition, if through injury a soldier can't return to the army, ARCs offer some support in looking at retraining options for a new career. "Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 to provide direct, practical support to our wounded. The charity is non-political and while it recognizes that we are helpless to prevent war, we can help to improve the lives of those wounded in them. We welcome this terrific fund raising initiative and encourage anyone who wants to do their bit' for our Servicemen and women to buy the DVD and help our modern heroes by watching the deeds of our past heroes." Bryn Parry, CEO Help for Heroes. Heroes - The Greatest War Movies Ever! will be released on DVD (£9.99) by Revolver Entertainment on 25th January 2010.
